Drought Horn of Africa
Living on the frontlines of climate change
2021 - 2023
Between 2021 and 2023, Somalia and northern Kenya faced their worst drought in recent history, deepening food insecurity for millions and fueling a decades-long conflict over natural resources.
The climate crisis displaced over a million people. As crops failed and livestock died, families left their homes in search of aid and stability in overcrowded urban settlements.
These photographs, taken over two years in the hardest-hit areas of Somalia and Kenya, document the daily struggles of tens of thousands of people—especially women and children—confronting the realities of climate change.
In the Horn of Africa, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe, upending lives built around agriculture and livestock. With little time to recover between shocks, many now live in precarious shelters on the outskirts of cities, watching their traditional ways of life vanish under the weight of global warming.
